Expedition Finally Seeing an FC Bayern Match — August 27th-Septemeber 11th 2024

A shared longing more than a decade in the making carried my dad and me to Munich — to see FC Bayern Munich’s legends play live. We had high expectations, and still this trip surpassed them all. From cake in the Black Forest to train rides into the Alps, from the most terrifying roller coaster of my life and shouting Tor! in the Allianz Arena — here is where the details, memories, and postcards live, in the order they happened.

Our itinerary bounced us in and out of Munich, racking up over thirty hours on the rails. Lessons were learned, castles wandered, and beer gardens became our heroes during the heatwave.

Departing Phoenix — August 20th (much later than expected)

Sky Harbor and I… we’ll keep working on our relationship.

Frankfurt Airport — August 21st (about 4 hours)

It was fun, but how did you get on this Itinerary?

Garmish Partenkirchen — August 22nd-24th

Gorges,  Charming Bavaria and Zugspitze….you really elevated this trip

MunichAugust 23 1:07-3:30pm

we weren’t supposed to meet yet.

ZurichAugust 24th 10:37-13:59

We saw so much in three hours.

Freiburg im Breisgau — August 24th–29th

Your market, beer gardens, and Bächle left me thoroughly charmed.

Aying — August 21st — 22nd (not long enough)

Thanks for welcoming me, can’t believe the fairytale town on those bottle caps exists. Prost!

Breisach — August 24th-29th

More historic than a base for exploration  has any right to be.

Todtnau — August 25th  7:15-13:44

Alpine coasters, black forest cake and more on my Birthday.

Day Trip via Höllentalbahn — August 26th 7:15-14:18

A Train ride over Ravines, wandering Triberg…How did Donaushinigen become the star of the day?

Day Trip to Colmar — August 27th  7:00–11:36

Colmar, you were beautiful—and those crowds were terrifying.

Strasbourg — August 27th 11:36-16:22

Strasbourg, we didn’t have long enough.

Munich — August 29th –September 2nd

Shouting Tor in the Allianz arena and so much more.

Nice Here at Schloss Nyphenburg

I was overwhelmed by the sheer size of the palace, and then amused by a tourist from Baden-Württemberg’s cheeky choice of sticker placement.
This yellow sticker shows up in the oddest places — allegedly even the Grand Canyon. Its slogan is from an old ad campaign that never quite disappeared: Nett hier. Aber waren Sie schon mal in Baden-Württemberg?
“Nice here. But have you been to Baden-Württemberg?”
A wink from the Black Forest, reminding you there’s always another trip waiting.

Cheese Pretzel on Gameday

Envied fans with these pretzels through the TV for years. Finally my turn. “Eine Käsebrezn, bitte.”

Cochem — September 2nd-Spetmeber 3rd

Sloping vineyards, castles, and winding stone roads I’d have liked more time to discover your secrets.

standing in courtyard, castle in backround, and vineyards

Charmed in Cochem

Stood in the courtyard of our hotel with just one evening to spend here — the cost of Sunday scheduling for our match. The trains ran late, and yet we were charmed before we even checked in. Less time than hoped for, but Cochem still delivered: steep vineyards rolling up the hills and a castle perched above it all.

Brühl for Phantasialand — September 3rd-5th

Turn right at the castle to the alternative bus to the amusement park”… might be the best directions I’ve ever read in a guide.

Maastricht September — 5th-6th

You know how to wine and dine, thanks for the funny conversations, and fanciest dinner experience to date.

Liége — September 6th-7th

Your waffles, beer and fries make your stairs worth the climb.

Nuremberg  — September 7th-9th

Land of Oma’s with delicious food, castles and apparently the largest flea market in Germany.

Freising — September 9th-10th

Your historic beer cellar is incredible, and that last piece of cake from Bavaria? Perfect.

Munich Airport — September 10th

I’ll be back

“Feel free to drop your questions about any of these places down below—you might just inspire my next post.”
